Unpaid taxes add up in Reynoldsville
Friday, February 17, 2012
Reynoldsville Borough Secretary Jackie Dixon told the borough council Wednesday that as of February, 325 residents have not paid their personal assessment and per capita taxes.
As a result, the borough has been forced to use 80 percent of the tax anticipation note the council authorized in January. The TAN allowed the borough to borrow up to $100,000 to meet expenses until tax revenue is received in March and April.
Due to the unpaid $53,000 in taxes, the borough has had to borrow more than expected.
Dixon said charges have already been filed against more than 200 residents and the remainder will be filed in the coming week.
When those criminal charges get to the magistrate, it costs an additional $175 ($100 fine and $75 in court costs) to meet the obligation. As a result of not paying an initial tax bill of $132, a resident could now owe $367, $292 of which will be returned to the borough.
Since nonpayment is filed as a criminal complaint, not paying could result in a jail sentence.
