Rev. Richard S. Moyer, 85, formerly of Brockway, died on Feb. 10, 2012, at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Va.
Born Sept. 1, 1926, in Pipersville, he was the son of the late Ezra Paul and Anna Stover Moyer. He was married to Ruth Gingrich, Juniata County, from 1950 until her death in 2001. Surviving is his wife, Esther B. Peachey, formerly from Maumee, Ohio.
He attended Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, Va., in the late 1940s. His first pastorate was a small mission church in Lambertville. In 1954, he was ordained to the ministry by the Locust Grove Mennonite Church in Belleville, and commissioned by the church to pastor at the Crenshaw Community Church in Crenshaw. He remained there as pastor for the next 56 years. For a number of years, he pastored a second church in Portland Mills. He also was a school bus driver for the Brockway Area School District for over 40 years.
His life was characterized by his faith in God and his desire to spread that faith to others. In the second half of life, his passion became mission trips with Every Home for Christ. His trips took him to Russia, China, Fiji, and his favorite place, Africa. He was actively involved with the Brockway Ministerium and many other community activities.
He is survived by three children: Darlis Moyer of Harrisonburg, Va., Daniel (Patricia) Moyer of Falls Creek, and Lynnette (Stephen) Hughes of Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren; two siblings, Clara Moyer of Albrightsville, and Marvin Moyer of Owego, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Moyer of Plumsteadville.
Friends will be received on Thursday, Feb. 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Carlson -Shugarts Funeral Home in Brockway. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Friday. A committal service will follow at the Beechtree Cemetery.
