Ethics alive and well

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

We are proud of our area's championship athletes.
Sometimes, we are also proud of those who don't finish at the very top. Monday's sports section carried this vignette concering DuBois Area High School rifle team member Allen Solida, who shot 555 to place seventh in this past weekend's sstate championship. Joel Duttra, head coach, explained that Solida self-reported a scoring mistake that would have given him six points more than he ought to have been awarded.
The extra points would have put Solida in the top five, "but he said he wasn't going to take a score he didn't earn," Dutra said.
So the student, in this instance, becomes the teacher for all of us.
A sense of ethics is alive and well among some of our young people.
