SLIGO – Veterans and active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces will be honored in Sligo borough as the community embarks on a Hometown Hero project.
Modeled after the successful banner display in neighboring Rimersburg this year, Sligo Borough and Piney Township residents can purchase banners depicting family, friends and loved ones who served in the military, or who are currently serving.
Connie Graham, one of the project’s committee members, said that banner orders can be placed starting Nov. 1, and will continue until April 1 or until the number of available spaces on utility poles are filled. She said the banners will be placed prior to Memorial Day next year on poles along Colerain, Bald Eagle and Madison streets, with about 80 available spots for banners.
The 24-inch by 36-inch banners — which showcase a photo of the serviceman or woman, along with name, rank, military branch and era of service — will remain up through the summer and until a time after Veterans Day next November when they will be taken down and given to the purchaser.
Graham said that the banners are being sold on a first-come, first-served basis and cost $125 each. The cost also includes a smaller yard banner that the purchaser can display. The photos and information will also be posted online at www.troopbanners.com/Sligo.
The banners can be purchased for any active duty service member, as well as for honorably discharged veterans who were born, lived or are currently living in Sligo Borough or Piney Township. The service can be either wartime or peacetime.
Applications can be obtained at the Sligo Borough Office or the Sligo Post Office, and will be accepted starting Nov. 1. Payment must be made at the time the order is placed.
Applications can also be obtained from the following committee members: Connie Graham, (814) 745-2510; Brenda Kindel, (814) 745-2884; Anna Marie Laughlin, (814) 745-2458; and Nancy Shook, (814) 745-2206.
