Puppy Love: Pet food drive begins
Wednesday, March 2, 2011
BROOKVILLE - Tuesday a food drive kicked off in Brookville that will not benefit a single person. It will benefit dozens of pets however.
The 15th annual Ferringer's Flowers pet food drive started Tuesday, March 1 and will continue throughout the month.
Three-and-a-half-year-old Flossie Ferringer, the doggie in Ferringer's window, will be on hand to thank all of the donors with a fresh rose as a thank-you.
Betsy Ferringer said she is always amazed at the generosity of area residents who provide the food. She said each year the total in cash and food donations has risen. In 2009 the total was $2,183.61 in monetary contributions and 2,260 pounds of pet food. In 2010 that record was broken when $3,270 was donated and 2,935 pounds of food.
All donations, products and cash, will be donated to Clarion PAWS as well as local food banks. In the 14 years of the pet food drive, 15 tons of food have been donated as well as $17,669 in cash.
Last year students at Brookville's three elementary schools, Pine Creek, Northside and Hickory Grove collected food in their classrooms and the winning class was given a pizza party, courtesy of Ferringer's Flowers. Best of all, each class had a personal visit from Flossie.
Clarion PAWS distributes approximately 1,200 pounds of dog and cat food per month, and approximately 500 pounds of kitty litter.
Items are donated from the Clarion and Punxsutawney Walmarts, Clarion Tractor Supply and through separate food donation drives.
