BROOKVILLE - It was an impressive all-around effort by the Brookville wrestling team Tuesday evening as the Raiders clobbered Punxsutawney 65-6.
Brookville won all 13 bouts contested. The only exception was at 145 pounds, where Punxsutawney won by forfeit.
That was about the only positive for the Chucks. The Raiders finished the night with six pins and five decisions, including two by major decision.
Although the outcome was lopsided, Punxsutawney had a couple worthy opponents in Neko Capella, Seth Spack and Carl Langley but neither was able to knock off his opponent.
Capella and Jimmy Miller were tied at three after two periods in the 138 contest, but the Raider sophomore scored five points in the third to upend Capella, 8-6, and give Brookville a 25-0 lead.
The third period also decided the 160 match between Brett Smith and Spack. Smith led 1-0 with an escape late in the second and then he tacked on three near fall points with less than 30 seconds remaining for a 4-0 decision.
Langley, who was tied with Spack and Joel Bowers with a team-high 10- wins, was no match for Tyler Dombroski who rolled to a 10-3 decision at 182.
Trey Constable (120) and Zach Vroman (152) also won by major decisions, while Brady Mineweaser (113), Dalton Zimmerman (126), Cole Clever (132), Taylor Cudworth (170), Logan Stout (195) and Jacob Cieleski (22) recorded pins.
Nathan Nosker and Devin Joiner received forfeits at 285 and 106 respectively.
"That was our best effort as a team," Brookville head coach Dave Klepfer said. "The kids were wrestling for bonus points.
"Hats off to Punxsutawney, moving their kids around, trying to get better matches for the kids."
Three of Brookville's six pins came in the first period. Mineweaser opened the event at 113 and cradled Andrew Bullers with 13 seconds left in the period.
Constable followed at 120. Leading 2-1 after the first, a nine-point second put him in total control en route to an 11-3 lead and a 13-4 major decision over Joel Bowers.
Zimmerman was the second Raider in three matches to pin his opponent. He scored a quick takedown and then covered Darin James for the pin with 50 seconds left in the first.
Clever also won by pin at 132. Punxsutawney's Devan Snyder held a one-point lead after the first period, but he couldn't hold his opponent down to start the second. Clever used a reversal to gain control midway through the period and he notched the fall with 14 seconds left.
The Miller-Capella bout at 138 went down to the end. The two were deadlocked at three to start the third. Capella let Miller up to start the third, and the Chuck regained the lead with a takedown midway through the third. However, he was called for penalty for interlocking his hands. That shifted the momentum to Miller, who avoided Capella's strike and scored a takedown with about 31 seconds left to go up 8-5.
After Punxsy's Perry Arrington won by forfeit at 138, Vroman overpowered Caeser Maruca en route to a win by major decision, 16-3. Vroman led 7-0 and 10-1 after the first two periods of the 152 match.
At 160, Spack and Smith locked up. Smith scored the only point through the first two periods using an escape with 18 seconds left in the second. The Raider extended his lead late in the third following a restart in which he recorded three near fall points with 29 seconds left to get a 4-0 decision.
Cudworth made short work of Ryan Marshall at 182. He had a quick five-point lead 35 seconds into the bout and he finished Marshall off with a pin eight seconds later.
At 182, Dombroski was in control of Carl Langley early, recording three near fall points twice in the first to open up to an 8-0 lead. Dombroski won 10-3.
The Raiders ended with a pair of pins in the final two contested matches.
After a scoreless first, Stout got the best of Josh Neal in the second. Stout's reversal put him in control and then he got a takedown midway through the period. Neal nearly escaped, but Stout slammed him down and hooked his right leg and arm to secure the pin with 10 seconds left.
Cieleski also won with a second-period pin. He and Titus Young were scoreless after one, but Cieleski escaped in the second, had a quick takedown followed by the fall seconds later.
"We got a bunch of young kids that are wrestling extremely well right now," Klepfer said. "We got some ninth graders in Cole Clever, Dalton Zimmerman's leading the team in wins. Jimmy (Miller) just knocked off a state-level kid.
"We got some ninth graders really stepping up and that's what we were hoping for in this part of the year because we know what we are getting with our older guys. We're getting to the part of the year where we'll really be tested by some teams. If we can get healthy, it's going to be a fun stretch."
