Lady Raiders split with ECC, Brockway

Wednesday, February 8, 2012

ST. MARYS - In the first of two games in three days against Elk County Catholic Monday, the Brookville Lady Raiders dropped a 50-31 decision on the road.
Wednesday, the Lady Raiders (11-7) were scheduled to play ECC once again on Senior Night. From there, it's a trip to unbeaten Bradford Friday.
The Lady Crusaders improved to 17-2 with Monday's win. Brookville never really challenged ECC in the first game of the home-and-home series. The Lady Raiders, playing their first game without senior and leading scorer Emily Ferraro, stumbled out of the gates and never recovered.
"As tonight's game went along, the girls worked through it as a group and never gave up," Brookville head coach Mark Powell said. "Their play on the floor got better and better. We need to figure it over the next couple of weeks and put it together and this team will do that."
Brookville will be without Ferraro for the remainder of the regular season, which will be five games, because she is on a family trip.
Karly Reinsel carried the load for Brookville in the second half, where she registered 13 of her game-high 16 points. Aisha Newsome scored eight points.
"We talked at halftime that this was going to take time and it'll take us time to figure it all out," Powell said. "I'm proud with how they fought through it and with each practice and each game, we'll get better."
The Lady Raiders never got settled in against ECC's defense, committing seven turnovers in the first quarter and 15 total in the first half.
ECC led from start to finish. Lexie Meholic added eight of her team-high 12 points in the first quarter. Taylor DaCanal ended with 11 points, while Kristy Hanes added nine and Abbi Petrosky eight.
All five of the Lady Crusaders starters scored in the first half. That group used an 11-3 run between the first and second quarters to increase their three-point advantage into a 17-6 lead.
Brookville made just one field goal in the second quarter, a basket by Madison Hill with five minutes left before the half.
They Lady Raiders finished 3-for-15 from the field in the first half and trailed 25-9 at the half.
ECC put the finishing touches on the game, exploding for 20 points in the third quarter.
The Lady Crusaders got off to a hot start, making their first three shots of the period and seven of eight to take a commanding 42-16 lead with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
DaCanal did most of the most damage, registering eight points in the period.
Brookville lost the junior varsity game, 33-26, to drop the Lady Raiders to 3-12. Emily Rickard scored eight points while Amanda Ray finished with seven points. Kylee Deal scored five points.
