GENEVA, Ohio — Qualifying in three events with top-seven finishes, Brookville seventh-grader Brody Barto will compete in this year’s YMCA State Swimming Championships.

He’ll head to Penn State University’s McCoy Natatorium on March 25. Swimming in the prep division (11-and-12-year-old), Barto qualified in the 200-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly.

Barto’s best finish was fourth in the 100 freestyle (59.35) at last Sunday’s Western District Meet at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. He also finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:11.93) and added a seventh in the 50 butterfly (30.42).

Swimmers secured a state berth with a top-six finish with wild card berths going to other fastest times, which got Barto qualified in the 50 butterfly.

Barto is seeded 15th in the 100 freestyle, 18th in the 50 butterfly and 19th in the 200 freestyle.

The Brookville Barracudas had 24 swimmers participate in Ohio last weekend. Also swimming in the 11-12 division on the girls’ side and just missing state berths was Kerrigan Swartz. She finished seventh in the 50 breaststroke (35.64), eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.9) and also finished 24th in the 50 freestyle (29.19).
