CLARION — After failing to make the District 9 playoffs finishing with an 8-14 record last season, the Clarion Lady Cats basketball team under the direction of head coach Tracy Durish are hoping to get over the hump and make a return trip to the postseason.

The key to making that goal begins with three returning starters in junior Wendy Beveridge, the team’s top returning scorer at 11.1 points per game, sophomore Kaitlyn Constantino and senior Sadie Rudesyle.

“We have three starters returning from last season so they will once again be starting this season,” said Durish. “Ali Troese, Kyara Girvan, and Cassie Acey will most likely round out the top six in our rotation.”

“We lost Gloria Kroh to graduation and we will also be without Alexis Constantino who decided not to play this season so she can concentrate on volleyball which she will be playing in college,” continued Durish.

Constantino led the team in scoring last year at 16.2 points per game.

Clarion has a roster of 15 girls with just one senior in Rudesyle (2.2 ppg.) while also bringing up seven freshmen to join the team this season. The Lady Cats also have five juniors and two sophomores.

“We have a lot of speed and versatility at the guard position,” said Durish. “They have height and can switch between point and shooting guard. Our top offensive guards are Wendy, Kaitlyn, and Ali. I feel in order for us to win we will need to stick to the game plan and work as a team. Everyone will need to be involved and contribute on both ends of the floor. The goal is to make it back to the playoffs after missing out last season.”

Constantino averaged 4.6 points per game.

Clarion opens this weekend at the Brockway Tip-Off Tournament.
