District 9’s basketball teams went 7-11 in last weekend’s first round of the PIAA state playoffs.

Making it to the second round, which was scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday were three boys’ teams — Elk County Catholic in Class 1A and Coudersport and Ridgway in Class 2A — and four girls’ teams with North Clarion and A-C Valley in Class 1A, Coudersport in Class 2A and Brookville in 3A.

The other second-round results on Tuesday:

Class 1A Boys: Bishop Carroll 57, Elk County Catholic 47

Class 2A Girls: Reynolds 38, Coudersport 35

Wednesday’s schedule:

Class 1A Girls: North Clarion vs. Farrell, 6 p.m. at Slippery Rock University.; A-C Valley vs. Kennedy Catholic, 7:30 p.m., Slippery Rock University.

Class 2A Boys: Coudersport vs. Our Lady of Sacred Heart, 7 p.m. at Brookville H.S.; Ridgway vs. Sewickley Academy, 6 p.m. at Armstrong High School (Kittanning).

Boys: ECC, Coudy,

Ridgway win openers

Three D9 boys’ teams got by the first round with Coudersport and Ridgway advancing in Class 2A on Saturday. The D9 champion Falcons and runner-up Elkers both won at St. Marys Area High School.

Ridgway (26-1) put together a strong second half in its 55-42 win over North Penn-Mansfield. The Elkers outscored their D4 foes, 34-20, in the second half after trailing by one point at halftime.

Last Friday, Elk County Catholic cruised to a 66-40 win over D10 runner-up Jamestown. Ryan Newton scored 22 points and Alex Breindel finished with 19 points.

The Class 3A boys’ champion Karns City was among Saturday’s D9 losers. District 10 third-placer Mercyhurst Prep jumped out to a 42-16 halftime lead and routed the Gremlins, 78-47.
