It’s opening weekend for the Brookville and Clarion-Limestone winter sports teams and all but one will be in action somewhere.
At home, the both Brookville basketball teams and the Clarion-Limestone girls are playing in Brookville’s annual tip-off tournaments starting Friday and finishing up Saturday.
The Clarion-Limestone boys, a longtime visitor at the Brookville tournament, will be playing in Grove City this weekend instead.
The Brookville Raiders wrestlers once again start at Saturday’s Sheetz Kickoff Classic in Greenville.
The only team not in action, the Brookville swimming and diving team, opens Dec. 15 at home against Marion Center.
Here’s a closer look at the weekend schedule:
While the girls’ field of four teams remains the same with the hosts, C-L, Clearfield and North Clarion, the boys have a new team with Moniteau replacing C-L to join the hosts, Union and Brockway.
Friday’s schedule starts with the girls at 3 p.m. with North Clarion taking on Clearfield in a first-round game followed by a boys’ opening-rounder with Union and Brockway at 4:30. Then it’s a Brookville doubleheader with the Lady Raiders and C-L at 6 with the Raiders and Moniteau wrapping up the night at approximately 7:30 p.m. or later.
Saturday’s schedule has the girls’ consolation starting at 2 p.m. with the boys’ third-place game at 3:30 p.m. Then it’s the girls and boys playing championship games at 5:30 and 7:30 respectively.
Last year, Brockway beat C-L for the boys’ title in a 64-40 rout with the Raiders finishing third after beating Union in the consolation game, 54-39. On the girls’ side, North Clarion beat Clearfield, 51-39, for the title with Brookville beating C-L, 46-12, in the consolation game.
C-L boys at Kiser Classic
At Grove City, the Lions have two pre-determined games to start their season at the Kiser Classic.
Friday, they’ll open with Slippery Rock at 5:30 p.m. with another 5:30 game Saturday against host Grove City.
Raiders at Greenville opener
The Raiders have a meaty list of foes at Saturday’s Sheetz Kickoff Classic hosted by Greenville.
They’ll open with two strong Class 3A teams, McDowell at 9 a.m. and Waynesburg at 10:15. The Raiders match up with host Greenville at 12:15 p.m. followed by Erie — the new co-operative sports setup for the city teams outside of Cathedral Prep and McDowell — at 1:30. They finish up with Harbor Creek at 5:15 p.m.
Brookville beat D10 runner-up Harbor Creek, 39-17, in the PIAA duals last spring.
The Raiders have gone 5-0 at the Classic the past three years, their last loss there in 2013 coming at the hands of power Class 3A Canon-McMillan. That’s the last loss the Raiders have had on the mat outside of the Ultimate Duals or PIAA Duals.
In 2014, the Raiders needed criteria to beat Waynesburg, 31-30.
Next Tuesday, the Raiders open at home against Clarion.
