Knights charge into playoffs with 49-0 win
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
FOXBURG - A long time coming but the long-sought day finally arrived as the Union Golden Knights earned their first-ever berth in the district playoffs by romping to a 49-0 victory over the Allegheny-Clarion Valley Falcons in a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference Small School Division contest on Friday.
With District 9 beginning its football playoffs in 1987, Union was one of three schools in the district that had not appeared in the postseason tournament and ending that streak was one of the Knight's goals as the 2011 season started. Union had not appeared in postseason play since playing in back-to-back championship games for the Little 12 Conference in 1984 and 1985. Not having won more than five games in any single season since going 9-1 in both the '84 and '85 campaigns, the Knights surpassed that with their sixth win of the season and improved to 3-2 in the division by topping A-C Valley.
