Gators chomp down on Knights for 37-8 win
Wednesday, November 16, 2011
PORT ALLEGANY - Consider the first quarter a feeling-out process as the Union Golden Knights and Port Allegany Gators mounted scoring threats but couldn't complete drives in the opening 12 minutes of a District 9 Class A playoff game on Saturday.
But after the opening period, it was no more touchie-feelie for Port Allegany as the Gators dominated the second and third quarters with five touchdowns before giving up a fourth-period TD to Union and moving on to the district semifinals with a 37-8 victory.
With the Knights making their first-ever playoff appearance, second-seeded Port Allegany welcomed Union to the postseason by scoring on three straight second-quarter possessions and were driving for a fourth when the first half ended with the Gators holding a 22-0 lead.
