Leonard C. Sayers, 85, died Sunday, February 12, 2012, at Forbes Hospice in Pittsburgh.
Born February 26, 1926 in Reynoldsville to Samuel and Laura Fuller, he was later adopted by loving parents, Orr and Goldie Sayers of Summerville.
A graduate of Clarion-Limestone High school, Mr. Sayers attended Erie Business College, Biblical Life Institute (formerly Transylvania Bible School) and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from California University of Pennsylvania. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Biblical Life Institute.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Sayers began his career as a broadcaster at WAVL Radio station in Apollo. In 1961, he became the Methodist minister at the United Methodist Church in Madison, Pa. Later, he became a teacher and principal at Yukon Junior High School in the Yough School District. Upon retirement from teaching, he was elected president of the school board at the Yough School District.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Guthrie Sayers; three children, Leslie Sayers of Crestview, Fla. and his wife, Ellen, Lois Sayers of Lower Burrell and her husband, Daniel Joseph, and Constance Sayers Witherspoon of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Leonard Lyle Sayers; two sisters, Louise Fuller and June Smiley; and a twin brother, Donald Ellenberger.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 17, at Nevin Memorial United Church of Christ in Fairmount City, Frogtown, with the Rev. Sam Swick officiating.
Immediately following the funeral service, the Walter W. Craig Post 354 American Legion of New Bethlehem will honor their fallen comrade.
Interment will be in the Salem Cemetery in Fairmount City.
Donations in Mr. Sayers' name can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
