Arthur G. 'Burke' Hinderliter, 94

Arthur G. "Burke" Hinderliter, 94, of Cottage Hill, New Bethlehem, died February 4, 2012, in Sarasota, Fla. following a period of declining health.
Born November 4, 1917 in Ringgold Township, Jefferson County, he was the son of Charles and Margaret "Maggie" (Boyles) Hinderliter.
He married Mazie S. Hilliard on January 16, 1940. She preceded him in death on April 24, 2005.
Mr. Hinderliter was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 336th Army Engineering Battalion. He saw combat action in France and Germany including service at the "Battle of the Bulge." He received an Honorable Discharge on December 4, 1945 and returned to work as a heavy equipment operator for the Reddinger Coal Co. and Tionesta Sand and Gravel Co.
He later was appointed as PennDOT highway foreman in Southern Clarion County.
Upon retirement, Mr. Hinderliter remained very active traveling to several national veteran reunions, camping, tinkering with automobiles and other equipment, reading, gardening, and developing new interests in shuffleboard, billiards and visiting old acquaintances he met throughout his life. In his final years, he explored abandoned railroad lines and back country trails.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda McClowry and her husband, Richard, of New Bethlehem, Nancy Sherry and her husband, Guy, of New Bethlehem, and Margaret Hinderliter of Clarion; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Robert (infant), James (infant), Harry, Charles, Blake, Dean, Leo and Russell "Jake" Hinderliter; a sister, Sarah Clontz; and a half-brother, Clarence Shoup.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, February 17, at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn.
Funeral services will follow at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Sam Bungo officiating.
Immediately following the funeral service, the Walter W. Craig Post 354 American Legion of New Bethlehem will honor their fallen comrade.
Interment will be in Middle Run Cemetery, Redbank Township, Clarion County.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palmer Ranch Rehab Center at 5111 Palmer Ranch Parkway, Sarasota, FL 34238.
