Misery Collector’s Edition Blu-ray (R)

Movie: 4 out of 4 stars

Disc: 3 1/2 out of 4 stars

One of the scant few superb adaptations of Stephen King works, “Misery” stars James Caan as Paul, the writer of a series of period-piece romance novels adored by reclusive spinster Annie (Kathy Bates). After crashing his car during a snowstorm, Paul is rescued by Annie, who nurses him back to health but is incensed after reading the manuscript of his latest “filthy” novel. Evenly paced by director Rob Reiner and master screenwriter William Goldman, “Misery” is a character-driven suspense thriller that pushes many emotional buttons and ultimately delivered Bates a well-deserved Oscar for Best Actress. This new edition includes lots of previously unreleased extras and a revamped print that is well worth the purchase price.
