BROCKWAY — Money can be such a tough subject for parents to discuss with their children, though it is certainly necessary for our children to have knowledge of basic financial information. Along with an understanding of the basics, children (especially young adults) also need to learn how to put that information to practical use. At one time or another almost everyone has said, “If only I knew then what I know now, I’d be a millionaire.” Too often we intend to talk to our children about finances, yet somehow don’t quite get around to it. We all know too well that time flies by in a blink of an eye, and our children are off and running in this game called life.

We are so very fortunate to live in a nation where we have so many advantages if only we look. Mengle Memorial Library offers numerous resources which are available for all ages. A few samples of available titles are Smart Money Smart Kids: Raising the Next Generation to Win by Dave Ramsey/Rachel Cruz, and How to Earn Money by Ryan Rudolph.

Part of Mengle Memorial Library’s mission is to inspire both children and parents to start the conversation regarding Financial Literacy. According to The Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Literacies Initiative, PA Forward:

With the right support, libraries are ideally positioned to become the community centers of information, technology, and learning that will fuel educational and economic opportunity for all of our citizens.

As part of the PA Forward initiative for Financial Literacy, Mengle Memorial Library is excited to provide onehour sessions for six weeks free to tweens and teens and their parent/guardian. We hope to empower our community’s young people and their parents to jump start the conversation regarding finances and the future. Our sessions will have interactive games and discussion aimed at helping participants apply lessons to their lives. The sessions will take place Jan. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and Feb. 7, 2018, from 4-5 p.m.

The materials presented are provided through Junior Achievement.

Call the library at 814-265-8245 for more information and/or to register your child.

As a reminder, Mengle Memorial Library follows the Brockway Area School District regarding winter weather closings. Should classes be cancelled/dismissed early due to inclement weather, the library will also close. The financial literacy program will then be rescheduled to the following week.
