RIDGWAY — Ridgway Area High School 10th grade students recently completed their final “Career Cruise” this school year exploring careers throughout Ridgway. Tenth grade students in Ms. Schaut’s and Mr. Olson’s classes begin their exploration in the classroom as they plan for life after high school. The career cruises help students get a glimpse of the job opportunities and employer expectations within in the local area. Students met with employees from Penn Highlands Elk Physical Therapy, Radiology and Lab and American Axel Manufacturing. During their visit to the Emergency 911 Center, they also learned about jobs within the Elk County Prison and Children and Youth Services. The afternoons ended with a walking tour of downtown Ridgway to spotlight retail sales and entrepreneurship. Stops throughout the year included Katering by Kate, Grace’s Notary, Anderson & Kime Realty, Carey Mac’s Salon, H&R Block, McGrath CPA, Western PA Conservancy, Farmer’s Bank and CNB Bank.

At many of the stops, students learn that many jobs have become technology advanced. Positions are becoming complex and specialized. Many times students heard that there is “ample room for advancement.” Students were advised that those with a good work ethic and desire to learn can start in the company and work their way up to a management position. Students also learned about summer employment and college internship opportunities. Students were encouraged to contact the companies to schedule a job shadow if they have an interest in that field.

This event was coordinated by the Community Education Center’s (CEC) DISCOVER Partnership and is aimed at supporting career education and creating an awareness of local employment opportunities. Schools or companies interested in participating next school year may contact the CEC at (814) 781-3437 or cec@communityedcenter.com.
