Elk County eyes new building for recycling center

ST. MARYS — Clad in winter attire, Elk County’s Solid Waste/Recycling coordinator Bekki Titchner, wandered through the vast and cold expanse of the 30,000 square foot industrial building she hopes to relocate the county’s recycling center to this year.

In November, the county agreed to purchase the property at 508 Washington St. in St. Marys for $920,000. Located directly across from Osram Sylvania, it formerly housed Advanced Recycling Equipment, which had been repossessed by Northwest Savings Bank.

Since the Elk County Solid Waste Authority started a fund drive for the new center, it has amassed $360,000 in funding, with another initial commitment of $200,000 from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation.

Several other grant requests are still being reviewed by various entities for equipment, a full assessment of the biomass system, and for the building as well as any changes which need to be made to it.
