ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Area School District Board of Directors recognized four teachers who were recently awarded classroom grants at a regular meeting Tuesday night. Laura Leuschel, Shannon Eckels, Jamie Caskey and Chasidy Gornati all received grant moneys from the Pennsylvania Association of Rural and Small Schools, or PARSS.

PARSS advocates for over 150 schools districts, according to its website. This summer, Superintendent G. Brian Toth said during the meeting, PARSS wrote to school administrators to announce that it had $5,000 in grant money for which teachers could apply.

On Nov. 10, Toth said, he was notified that four teachers in the district would be awarded grants for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. In total, Leuschel, Eckels, Caskey and Gornati were awarded $1,165.08.

Board members and administrators both applauded the four for writing and securing the grants.

“If it wasn’t for your extra special efforts,” Toth said, “we wouldn’t have this, and we wouldn’t have something extra special for our students.”
