ST. MARYS — City of St. Marys Parks and Recreation Director Dani Schneider says she has “the dream team” when it comes to this summer’s park staff.
Despite rumors that seem to be circulating around the community, the parks are opening and functioning normally. Adult sport leagues have been delayed for two weeks, though, Schneider adds.
Besides cleaning and disinfecting the parks and playgrounds, youth programs have taken place as scheduled, Schneider says, and families seem grateful their children can be out and about.
Day camps have been very popular, Schneider said. Nature camp and camping/outdoors are held at Benzinger Park, while backyard games and sports camps are held at Memorial Park.
Some other activities being held at Memorial Park include yoga and dance classes with Temple Studio LLC Monday through Thursday.
The parks’ art program, in partnership with Elk County Council on the Arts, also began recently, featuring PA Made residency artist Mickayla Poland. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday mornings in the Clubhouse at Memorial Park through July 27.
Park and City employees have painted new murals at the parks, too, including a bright orange design with the parks logo and a “Let Your Dreams Be Your Wings” butterfly mural at Memorial Park and an ice-skating mural at Kaulmont Park.
There are also sidewalk chalk obstacle courses children can enjoy.
Schneider says thanks to a dedicated and passionate parks team, the summer has been “less stressful” and has went smoothly thus far.
“Everyone has stepped up — I have the dream team,” she said. “I couldn’t be anymore proud. They enjoy it and they’re happy to be here.”
Schneider also noted the community has been very supportive.
