About the Gardeau Train wreck and Portage Creek Spill
On June 30, 2006 an unprecedented tragedy struck the Portage Valley. A south-bound Norfolk-Southern train derailed while descending from Keating Summit and dumped thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals into the Sinnemahoning Portage Creek. From there the chemicals went down-stream and affected the Sinnemahoning and the Driftwood Branch.
That amazing creek was home to more than just fish and insects. It was home to crayfish, frogs and salamanders. There were also ducks and herons and other wild animals that depended on those fish for food as did the local tourist business and consequently the local economy of the affected counties ... especially Cameron County.
Sizerville.com has established a web site dedicated to documenting this tragedy as completely as possible. The intent is to ensure that everyone, everywhere fully appreciates and never forgets the significance of this horrible accident.
