RV girls bear down on defense for 45-20 victory

NEW BETHLEHEM - Allowing a dozen points in the first half, Redbank Valley was even stingier in the final two quarters as the Lady Bulldogs yielded eight points after the intermission and rode the solid defensive effort to a 45-20 victory over the East Forest Lady Bears in a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference contest on Friday.
A tight contest through the first 11 minutes of the game, Redbank held a slim 11-10 lead before seizing command with an 11-2 run to end the first half. Surrendering six points in each of the first two periods, the Lady Bulldogs did even better in the second half as East Forest was limited to four points in both the third and fourth quarters. From a one-point edge with 5:06 remaining in the first half, Redbank surged to a 22-12 halftime advantage and continued to pull away in the second half. Holding the Lady Bears to three field goals and a pair of free throws after the halftime break, the Lady Bulldogs clamped down on defense to end a six-game losing streak with the 25-point win.
Michelle Veronesi topped Redbank with a game-high 14 points as the Lady Dogs improved to 3-7 in KSAC play and 6-9 overall. Jessica Gruver and Shawn Neiswonger tossed in six points each and Paige Adams added five as nine Redbank players scored in the game. Veronesi collected eight steals and six assists while Neiswonger and Adams pulled down five rebounds each.

RV crowns one champ at Fred Bell wrestling tourney
GROVE CITY - Crowning one individual champion, the Redbank Valley Bulldogs finished eighth in the 27-team Fred Bell Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Grove City High School on Friday and Saturday.
Trevor McCauley claimed the lone Redbank title while Tyler McCauley finished third and Justin Radaker took fifth in the 27th edition of the annual tournament.
Erie Cathedral Prep rolled to the team championship with 225 points and McDowell finished in the runnerup position with 201.5. Cuyahoga Falls Valley Christian (Ohio) finished third with 171 points, Commodore Perry was fourth at 154 and Mercer rounded out the top five teams with 115.5. Redbank took eighth place in the final standings with 95.5 points.
Wrestling at 135 pounds, Trevor McCauley started the tournament with pins in the first two rounds on Friday. Pinning Sharpsville's Tyler Parshall at 3:41 in the pigtail round and stopping Hickory's Dom Freeman-Otey at 3:34 in the preliminary round. Moving into the quarterfinals, McCauley rolled up a 12-2 major decision over General McLane's D.J. Myers and followed with a 3-1 decision of Northwestern's David Osterberg in the semifinals to reach the championship round.

Knights blast Vikings, 95-75
RIMERSBURG - Flirting with the century mark, Union fell a few points short of 100 but a quartet of double-figure scorers propelled the Golden Knights to a 95-75 victory over the Venango Catholic Vikings in a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference clash on Saturday.
Breaking on top with a 22-18 lead at the end of the opening quarter, Union came back with a 26-18 second period and claimed a 48-36 advantage at the halftime break. Holding a 12-point lead at the intermission, the Knights pulled away in the third quarter with a 28-15 barrage and more than doubled their lead to 25, 76-51, at the end of three. Venango Catholic clipped five points off Union's winning margin, outscoring the Knights, 24-10, in the fourth period as the Vikings narrowed the final gap to 20, 95-75.

Damsels pull away in 2nd half
RIMERSBURG - Owning a six-point lead at the half, the Union Golden Damsels pulled away from the Venango Catholic Lady Vikings in the final two quarters for a 54-30 victory in Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference play on Saturday.
Up by a point after eight minutes of the play, the 12-11 advantage grew to 23-17 at halftime as Union started to pull away with an 11-6 second period. A 19-6 third quarter powered the Damsels to a 42-23 advantage through three frames and Union wrapped up the victory with a 12-7 fourth period.
