CLEARFIELD - A free prescription discount card will be available to residents in Clearfield County in a few months.
The Clearfield County Commissioners approved Tuesday taking the first steps to joining the National Association of Counties prescription card program.
"We just recently reactivated our membership with NACO and a number of surrounding counties are already participating in this program," McCracken said, adding that residents could receive up to 30 percent off of their prescriptions.
McCracken said there are 30 pharmacies in Clearfield County that accept the card. It is not an insurance card.
"This is just the first step," McCracken said. "It will probably take three months or longer before we can distribute the cards. This is a tremendous program to help with health care costs."
"This program is at no cost to the county," Commissioner Rex Read said. "It will be a great help for those folks paying for medication on their own and I look forward to offering it."
Commissioner Mike Lytle agreed. "It will especially help older people and those on a fixed income," he said. "It should be a wonderful benefit to the people."
McCracken said the card will be available to all county residents, even if they already have insurance. It can be used to save consumers money on prescriptions not covered by insurance.
In personnel issues, the commissioners accepted three retirements.
Samuel McClelland and Nels Malloy, both corrections officers at the jail, effective Dec. 31, and Sally Polachek, magistrate secretary for District Judge Michael Rudella, effective, Dec. 29.
They also accepted the resignation of Brenda Hunter as department clerk in the office of emergency management, effective Dec. 29.
In other business, the commissioners:
* Appointed George Heigel of DuBois to the Clearfield County Industrial Development Authority.
* Appointed Lois Richards of Curwensville to the full board of North Central as the education/workforce representative.
* Reappointed Jack Green of DuBois to the Clearfield/Jefferson MH/MR advisory board.
* Appointed Leroy Neeper to the Clearfield County Planning Commission.
* Awarded the county jail's food service contract to Compass Group.
* Will adopt the 2007 budget at a special meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28.
* Approved applying for a juvenile accountability block grant in the amount of $10,000.
