Late heroics lift Lady Beavers to win

DuBOIS - More often than not, wins in softball usually come on the heels of mistakes rather than from the shoulders of a potent offense.
However, that wasn't the case Tuesday as the DuBois Area High School softball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a 5-4, come-from-behind win over Clearfield.
Those runs came courtesy of a five-hit inning that included three doubles.
While it might have been exciting, it really shouldn't have been a surprise.
Not only was it at least the Lady Bisons' seventh one-run loss this year, it was also the second time that DuBois beat them in the seventh inning. The first came 11 days ago at the Bisons Sports Complex.
Still that win wasn't quite as dramatic as Tuesday's.
The Lady Beavers didn't have problems hitting the ball against Clearfield pitcher Mandy Rowles, touching her up for eight hits before the seventh, but that's when things really turned and it didn't take long to get going.
The Lady Beavers trailed 4-2 heading into the inning when cleanup hitter Lorianne Barbey opened the frame with a long double to left-center field. Leah Wallock then followed it up with another two-bagger to cut the lead to one.
Brittany Sayers then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Wallock to third before a groundout to second by Kendra Celinski tied the score.
With two outs and nobody on, it looked like the Lady Beavers were going to have to settle for the tie. However, all that changed with one swing of the bat as Meg Brown blasted another double to the fence. Brown then moved to third when Kirsten Wilcox beat out an infield hit.
DuBois then sent Wilcox slowly toward second in hopes of drawing a throw and sneaking in a run but the Lady Bisons didn't bite and Wilcox walked into second.
Alysha Lange then looped a single for the game-winner just over the outstretched glove of second baseman Alana Luzier who tried to make a diving catch in short right field.
Both teams started their scoring in the second inning as both put a run on the board, but Clearfield used a walk, a throwing error and a pair of singles to bring home three runs in the fifth.
But perhaps in a sign of things to come, DuBois got one of those runs back when Wallock ripped a one-out double to center and later scored to make it 4-2.
Clearfield had baserunners in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't push another run across.
Wallock and Wilcox each had three hits to lead the Lady Beavers while Barbey and Jendi Schwab both finished with two. Wallock had a pair of doubles while Barbey and Brown each had one.
Wallock also picked up the complete-game victory allowing four runs, one earned, on nine hits while walking one and striking out eight.
DuBois (14-5) will host Oil City at 3:45 p.m. today.
