ST. MARYS - The St. Marys High School girls' basketball team knew that records are sometimes meaningless coming into its District 9 matchup against Clearfield Wednesday evening.
However, in a mid-third quarter shuffle, St. Marys' Tammy Yanak put the Lady Dutch ahead for good with back-to-back 3-pointers, and the Lady Dutch never looked back, defeating Clearfield 55-47.
With the win, St. Marys increased its record to 16-1 while Clearfield fell to 4-11.
"I think what happened is that their pressure got to us, and we had a couple turnovers and they scored on us quickly," Clearfield head coach Joey Castagnolo said. "We changed the defense, and we weren't too worried about Yanak as much as we were worried about Hoohuli, and (Yanak) slipped a couple 3-pointers in on us, and that was like a dagger. We finally put four quarters together, I know a record shouldn't gauge a team, but we're not that team, and our record looks like we are. We gave St. Marys a fight tonight, that's a nice team. Like I said, we finally put together four quarters and it was a great District 9 game."
St. Marys' Gina Pelgrin led all scorers with 16 points while Kayla Hoohuli followed with 15, and Yanak and Emily Hathorn with eight points each.
Amber Byerly led the Lady Bisons with 14 points while Alanna Luzier and Elizabeth Peters followed 11 points each.
With eight points separating the two teams, the Lady Bisons made their move and put together an 8-3 run and took a 34-33 lead midway through the quarter. However, after Hathron's layup gave the Lady Dutch a slim 35-34 lead, Yanak took the shot outside the arc.
Annie Janocko responded with a deuce to keep the the Lady Bisons in the game.
However, on the next possession Yanak unleashed another trey while Hathorn added another deuce for a 43-36 third quarter lead.
"Third quarter, I wasn't real happy because they outrebounded us, I mean they were picking stuff off the boards and they were getting the loose balls and getting down court real quick. They were beating us down court," St. Marys head coach Bob Swanson said.
In the first quarter, St. Marys jumped out to a 12-8 lead with Pelgrin netting three buckets while Stinchcomb added two and Tia Cunningham one while the defense held Peters to two baskets and Alanna Luzier and Byerly one.
In the second quarter, the Lady Dutch slipped by the Lady Bisons 18-14 with Pelgrin putting in four buckets while Hoohuli added two and a trey and Yanak one basket.
Clearfield countered with three Byerly hoops while Jayme Ryan, Luzier, and Peters each netted one basket for a 30-22 score.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Dutch put the game on ice, outscoring the Lady Bisons 12-11 with Hoohuli netting three baskets while Hathorn added two more and Stinchcomb one, holding Ryan to two shots, one of which was a 3-pointer.
Both teams are in action Monday with St. Marys traveling to Johnsonburg while Clearfield hosts Ridgway.
