DuBOIS - For the second time this week DuBois' Leah Wallock and Brit Krise combined to throw a three-inning no-hitter as the Lady Beavers picked up a 16-1 win over Johnsonburg Thursday.
Wallock pitched two perfect innings Thursday, striking out all six Ramettes she faced to notch her seventh win on the season. Krise pitched the third inning and allowed an unearned run while striking out two. The pair faced just 10 batters, one over the minimum for three innings.
Tuesday, it was Krise who picked up the win in a 17-0, three-inning win at Ridgway. Krise worked the final two innings in that contest, striking out three and walking one. Wallock pitched the first inning against Ridgway, striking out two and hitting the first batter she faced.
With Wallock and Krise shutting down the Ramettes, DuBois' offense exploded for 16 runs on 10 hits in just two innings Thursday. Brit Sayers led the way for the Lady Beavers with a 3-for-3 day with three RBIs and one run scored. Lorianne Barbey added a 2-for-2 day with three RBIs, while Wallock had two hits, one a triple, and three RBIs.
"This was a week where we knew we could go a little lighter on practice but work on our fundamentals," said DuBois head coach Shawn Deemer. "It was nice to see the girls still come out and respond (without as much practice) and still have good swings. These types of games are good once in a while because they allow you to get in some of the girls who don't normally start and get some of the other pitchers some work, too.
"Our goal was to be at 8-2 after 10 games and right now where 9-1, so we're ahead of schedule a little. But, we have a tough stretch of games coming up, starting with Kittanning on Saturday. Then we have P-O (Philipsburg-Osceola) and Punxsy next week."
After Wallock struck out the side in the top of the first, DuBois jumped on scoreboard with three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the first. Kirsten Wilcox drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a two-out single to center by Barbey. Wallock followed with a triple down the left-field line to plate Barbey, while Wallock crossed home on a single by Brit Sayers.
Wallock struck out the side again in the second and DuBois put the game away with 13 runs in the bottom of the frame. The first nine Lady Beavers to bat in the inning reached safely on either singles or walks, leading to nine earned runs. DuBois then took advantage of four Johnsonburg errors late in the inning to push across four more unearned runs to take a 16-0 lead. A total of 18 Lady Beavers came to the plate in the inning.
Wallock and Barbey each had two-run singles in the frame, while Sayers had two RBI singles in the second. Carly Wallock added a run-scoring single, while Krista Tangren knocked in a run on a grounder that turned into an error. DuBois also scored three runs on wild pitches in the inning and two more on errors that could have ended the inning.
Johnsonburg scored its lone run of the game in the third off Krise. Ramette Sarah Vallone led off the inning and struck out, but reached first when the third strike got away from Barbey behind the plate.
Vallone stole second and scored when Bobbi Pritt reached on an error with two outs. Pritt was quickly erased from the bases when Barbey threw her out trying to steal second to end the game.
DuBois hosts Kittanning Saturday at 1 p.m. and then welcomes defending PIAA Class AA state champion Philipsburg-Osceola Monday before traveling to Punxsutawney Wednesday.
In Thursday's other games:
DuBois Central Catholic 8,
St. Marys 1
At St. Marys, the DuBois Central Catholic softball team won its third game in a row, topping St. Marys, 8-1.
The Lady Cardinals got a strong pitching performance from senior Abbie Heigel, who pitched a complete game shutout, allowing three hits while striking out 14 and walking just one.
Meagan Thomas led the DCC attack going 3-for-3, including two doubles, with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Heigel helped her own cause with two hits and three RBIs, while Sarah Flick added two hits and a RBI. Kim Cadori also had two hits, one a double, for DCC.
Tammy Yanak scored St. Marys' lone unearned run on an error in the fifth inning.
"We played a good all-around game today," said DCC head coach Jim Pullman. "And it was nice to see Abbie have a good game. St. Marys had a rally going in the one inning with runners on second and third with one out, but Abbie struck out the next two hitters to get out of it."
The Lady Cardinals (3-5) host Brookville Saturday at 2 p.m.
Clearfield 7,
Elk County Catholic 2
At Hyde, Clearfield's Mandy Rowles used her arm and bat to help lead the lady Bisons past Elk County Catholic, 7-2.
Rowles pitched a complete game five-hitter, allowing two runs while striking out nine and walking one. She also hit two home runs off ECC starter Lauren Evers and knocked in four runs. Alanna Luzier and Suzie Colesar both added 2-for-2 days at the plate for Clearfield with Luzier collecting three RBIs.
Loren Olewnik, Kayla Leuschel, Mary Kate Minnick, Kelsey Schwabenbauer and Anna Hawkins all had hits for ECC with Leuschel and Minnick driving in the two Lady Crusaders' runs. Olewnik had a triple, while Minnick hit a double.
Elk County (8-2) travels to Punxsutawney on Monday.
