During a recent Elk County Solid Waste Authority meeting, Bekki Titchner, recycling/solid waste coordinator, said she was contacted by two different businesses. One wanted to know what could be done with some totes it no longer needs and the other is interested in getting some totes. She put them in contact with each other.
Titchner said the authority could add a page to its Web site that would allow businesses to list materials they would like to give away along with their contact information.
A lot of items businesses have aren't recyclable, so the only option is to dispose of them.
The authority wouldn't hold onto the items, just list the contact information.
The authority decided it was a good idea. Titchner will contact businesses to let them know it will be available.
The authority will again offer a medicine collection. It will take place from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at Elk Regional Health Center. The Stackpole-Hall Foundation provided a $7,000 grant for the collection, which means collections should be able to be held quarterly for a year.
The last collection was held in June and about 10 percent of the medicines collected were controlled substances. The remaining medicines were split almost in half between non-controlled prescription medicines and over-the-counter items. About 17,000 pills were non-controlled prescription medicines. Most were blood pressure medicines.
The authority is looking for a place where white goods can be dropped off for recycling. White goods include items such as refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers. Twice yearly the authority pays to have the chlorofluorocarbons or CFC's removed from these items, but people have these items throughout the year. The items are too big and bulky to collect at the electronics recycling site.
The collection site would need to be manned otherwise items from outside the county would likely be dropped off, Titchner said.
In other authority news:
* Titchner is working with Fox Township Elementary School in Kersey, which is interested in starting a recycling program.
* The authority has recycled over a half a million pounds of electronics since the center opened.
* The next meeting of the authority will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 at Greentree Landfill in Fox Township.
