The township will receive a grant of $374,704 along with a loan of $375,386 for cleaning up and developing the site formerly occupied by the clay company, a producer of clay drainage pipe, that was a major employer in the community from its founding in 1926 through the Great Depression and World War II and through the 1980s. After closing due to competition from newer types of pipe, it remained vacant until the main structure was destroyed by fire in 1999.
North Central's loan involves acquisition of the property and its related costs. The grant will be used for demolition of the existing structures, minimal environmental cleanup, excavation and grading, extension of water and sewer lines and construction of roads and streets.
It is expected that there will be six sites available on the property that could bring about as many as 60 new jobs for the area. Snyder Township owns the grant but the management of it will be done by North Central. The township's only physical role may be to open things up.
