PULLING AWAY — Clearfield’s Jarrin Campman (4) runs through a tackle attempt by St. Marys’ Shawn Kronenwetter (42) on his way to scoring a 45-yard touchdown in the first quarter Friday. Campman ran for 175 yards and four TDs, threw for 19 yards and two more scores and also had two interceptions on defense to help lead the Bisons to a 42-20 victory and the District 9 Class AAA title.
BROCKWAY - Jarrin Campman had a night to forget against St. Marys in the playoffs last year, but Campman may never forget the impressive all-around performance he had Friday night to help the Bisons capture the District 9 Class AAA title with a 42-20 victory over the Dutch at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway.
Campman threw six interceptions in last year's 30-14 Class AAA semifinal loss to St. Marys, but exorcised some of those demons last week when he scored three touchdowns in the Bisons' 29-6 win over the Dutch that clinched the Mountain Athletic Conference Nittany League championship for Clearfield.
Last week doesn't even compare to what Campman did Friday with the district title on the line. The Bison senior quarterback had 27 carries for 175 yards and four touchdowns and also completed 4 of 7 passes for 109 yards and two more TDs.
Campman's huge night made him a 1,000-1,000 player on the season. He now has 1,088 yards rushing and 23 TDs to go along with 1,239 yards passing and 12 TD passes.
Campman's night wasn't limited to offense, though. He also had two interceptions, and nearly a third, on defense as well as knocking away a would-be touchdown from St. Marys' Shane Krise near the goal line on a fourth down play late in the first half. Had Krise scored on the play, St. Marys would have entered the locker room down a score but instead the Bisons led 21-7 at intermission.
"Jarrin had a phenomenal game," Clearfield coach Tim Janocko said. "He wanted to win and just took the game over tonight, and I think (last year) was in the back of his mind a little bit.
"They seemed to be ganging up on Isiah (Morgan), so we ran Jarrin more in the second half because that's what we needed to do. We put in a couple new wrinkles for Jarrin this week in practice and they seemed to work."
St. Marys coach Joe Schlimm also had high praise for Campman's performance.
"Jarrin Campman is a tremendous athlete and we didn't have an answer for him at all tonight," Schlimm said. "He definitely was the difference tonight."
Campman's big night overshadowed a strong team rushing performance by the Dutch. After rushing for just 90 yards last week, St. Marys put up 333 yards Friday and got 100-yard games from Kevin Hoy (19 carries, 129 yards) and Shane Krise (10-112) and nearly a third from Mitchell Straub (13-99). Krise scored twice in the second half, but the Dutch struggled to finish off drives and couldn't keep up with the Bisons in the shootout for the district crown.
"We knew St. Marys would play better tonight and that's a credit to Joe (Schlimm) and his coaches," Janocko said. "The defensive stop at the end of the first half was key. They got some yards against us, but we made them have methodical drives and got stops when we needed them.

St. Marys took the opening kickoff an quickly found itself in the red zone following a 47-yard jaunt by Krise. However, disaster struck the Dutch two plays later when Trey Campman picked off a Greg Simchick pass to end the threat.
The Dutch forced a quick three-and-out, but Jarrin Campman picked off Simchick on St. Marys' ensuing play to give Clearfield the ball at its own 27. Clearfield promptly went on a five-play, 77-yard scoring dive. Campman jump-started the drive with a 25-yard pass play to Derek Danver, then hit Brandon Sass on a 44-yard scoring strike three plays later to open the scoring. Parker Herrington booted the first of six extra points on the night to give Clearfield a 7-0 lead with 5:56 left in the opening quarter.
St. Marys picked up two first downs on its next drive before Jarrin Campman intercepted Simchick again, this time at the Bisons' 31 and returned it to midfield. Campman ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run two plays later and Herrington's PAT made it 14-0 with 16 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Dutch responded with an eight-play, 66-yard scoring drive. Straub had the key play of the drive, a 39-yard run on a counter to give St. Marys a first-and-goal at the Bisons' 5. Simchick bulled his way in from the 1 two plays later.
Clearfield came right back with a 10-play, 71-yard touchdown drive. Campman got the drive going with a 23-yard pass to younger brother Trey, while the older Campman and Morgan then ripped off runs of 15 and 16 yards, respectively, to get Clearfield in the red zone. Morgan had 71 yards on 13 carries.
Campman capped the drive five plays later with a 6-yard TD run on a sweep right. Herrington's kick made it 21-7 with 4:05 left in the first half.
St. Marys answered by marching right down the field, thanks in large art to runs of 18 and 23 yards by Straub. Simchick also hit Kyle Bennett for eight yards on a third-and-5 to give the Dutch a first-and-goal at the Clearfield 8.
The Dutch got as close as the 4 before Hoy was dropped for a two-yard loss. Derek Morgan then sacked Simchick for a seven-yard loss on third down. On fourth down, Simchick found Krise open coming across the middle. It appeared the Dutch senior might make the catch near the goal line but Campman knocked the ball away from behind to keep the score at 21-7.
St. Marys forced Clearfield to punt to open the third quarter and then got back into the game with an eight-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. Hoy ripped off a 48-yard run on the first play, while Krise added a nice 11-yard run three plays later when it appeared he'd be dropped for a loss. Krise scored on a sweep from six yards out four plays later and Barber's kick pulled the Dutch within seven at 21-14.
The Bisons countered with a quick six-play TD drive that went 60 yards. Campman had four carries for 24 yards while Morgan had one carry for 14. The Campman brothers capped the drive when Trey made a sliding grab in the end zone on a slant route for a 17-yard score. Herrington's kick put Clearfield back up 14 with 5:44 left in the third quarter.
Clearfield's defense forced a quick punt and the Bisons went to work on the ground with Campman and Morgan on a 10-play, 53-yard scoring drive.
Morgan had three carries for 23 yards on the drive, while Campman had seven for 30, including a 1-yard TD plunge on the first play of the fourth quarter.
St. Marys countered with another scoring drive, this one going 91 yards on 11 plays. The Dutch were aided on the series by a pass interference call, while Hoy and Krise had runs of 12 and 19 yards, respectively. Krise eventually capped the drive with a 7-yard score on a sweep left. A bad snap doomed the extra point as the Bisons led 35-20.
The Dutch tried an onside kick and Clearfield's Jack Millgard recovered it at the St. Marys' 47. Trying to run out the clock with 6:53 left, the Bisons kept the ball on the ground and picked up a key first down on a 13-yard run by Trey Campman on fourth-and-7 at the Dutch 30. Jarrin Campman broke free for a 12-yard TD run two plays later. Herrington's final PAT set the final at 42-20.
Clearfield (9-2) will travel to Cupples Field in Pittsburgh this weekend to take on the District 8 (City League) champion in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. St. Marys ends its season at 6-5.
