Clearfield-Brashear matchup looks like a shootout

PITTSBURGH - There shouldn't be a shortage of offense when Clearfield makes the long trek to Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh Friday night to battle City League champion Brashear in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs.
Both teams have their share of standout athletes who have put up big numbers this season and the game easily could turn into a shootout.
Clearfield (9-2) is led by the senior duo of quarterback Jarrin Campman and running back Isiah Morgan. Campman, in his second year as a starter at QB, has been the do-everything player for the Bisons this season.
After his huge performance last week against St. Marys in the D-9 AAA title game, Campman went over the 1,000-yard mark in rushing and is believed to be the first District 9 athlete to reach the 1,000-yard plateau in both passing and rushing in the same season.
Campman has thrown for 1,239 yards, 12 TDs and seven picks this season while running for 1,088 yards and 23 more touchdowns.
What makes Campman's feat even more impressive is the fact he has done it with Morgan running for 1,495 yards and 20 TDs.
The pair are the just the third set of D-9 teammates to each run for 1,000 yards in the same season this decade. The others are Brookville's Max Kutz and Joe Galbraith (2004) and Curwensville's Nate Sipes and Nick Sipes (2004).
"Those two (Campman and Morgan) definitely make our offense go," said Clearfield head coach Tim Janocko. "They make it hard for teams to predict our offense and really makes things balanced. If teams try to key on one, then the other can hurt you.
"As for Jarrin, he's had a very good season for us. I've been blessed with some great quarterbacks over the years like Chad Kroell, Tanner Kelly and Andrew (Janocko) but Jarrin is a different type of quarterback. He's more of a hybrid and mix between Andrew and Tanner because he can run and throw.
"And because of that we're running a different type of offense. Kroell, Tanner and Andrew were more West Coast-type quarterbacks, but with Jarrin's athletic ability we went to the spread offense like West Virginia runs."
Clearfield's offensive weapons aren't limited to just its backfield duo. Trey Campman, Jarrin's younger brother, is the Bisons' leading receiver with 44 catches for 550 yards and five TDs, while Brandon Sass has 18 grabs for 386 yards and five scores.
"I think we're going to have to throw a little more and be effective at it," Janocko said. "We did that last week (against St. Marys) and that helps take some pressure off our running game."
The Bisons also have a weapon on special teams in senior Parker Herrington, who has punted very well all season and made 57 of 58 extra points.
However, in order to pull out the win, the Bisons will have to find a way to slow down an explosive Bulls offense that is powered by a mammoth offensive line that is anchored by senior twin brothers John and Dave Wetzel.
John comes it a 6-6, 285 pounds, while Dave is 6-3, 280. Both are being looked at by smaller Division 1-A schools.
Brashear (10-1) has nine lineman listed at 250 pounds or more, while Clearfield has just two in senior starters Nick Redden (6-2, 258) and Robert Foust (6-4, 332).
That huge Bulls line paves the way for a trio of Brashear players who have enjoyed big years in the backfield.
Running back Bruce Patterson is the City League's leading rusher and has run for 1,115 yards and 14 TDs this season.
Backfield mate James Reed has 419 yards and seven touchdowns. Reed had a huge game last week with four TDs and four interceptions in Brashear's 26-20 win over Perry for the City League title.
Brashear quarterback Henri Chatman also had enjoyed a strong season completing 91 of 160 passes for 1,412 yards to go along with 14 TD passes and just four interceptions. Chatman also had run for 256 yards and six touchdowns.
Manasseh Garner is the Bulls leading receiver with 45 catches for 628 yards and six scores. Taji Linning has 23 grabs for 475 yards and eight TDs, while Reed has hauled in 11 passes for 223 yards and two scores.
Garner also is the leading tackler (73) on a Bulls defense that has allowed just 140 points in 11 games this year (12.7 points per game).
Brashear has allowed 20 or more points three times this year, but those three occurrences have come in the past five games.
The Bulls allowed 29 points to Wheeling Central Catholic (W.Va.) in its lone loss, 29-14.
Garner also has five of the team's 40 sacks. John Wetzel leads the team with seven, while Tony Burke also has five.
Reed leads the Bulls with five of the team's 18 interceptions.
"Obviously they're going to have the most size and speed we've seen all year," Janocko said. "I think we've put in a good scheme for them. We have to try to contain their speed, go to the football and make the tackle. We also have to play well on special teams. Those are two areas where we have to play well in.
"We just have to go down there and play good, sound football and keep our emotions in check. We're definitely battled tested with the games we played this season against teams like Tyrone, Central, DuBois, Huntingdon and St. Marys twice.
"We played six or seven teams that made the playoffs, so we just need to play our game and see where we stand."
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
