DuBOIS - It's always nice to celebrate senior night with a win.
That's what the DuBois volleyball team did as the Lady Beavers swept Clearfield 25-8, 25-13, 25-15 Thursday evening.
"Tonight was our senior night, so we had a lot of fun," DuBois coach Ashley Peterson said. "The girls played positions that they never played before. It made me nervous a little bit, but they had fun. They came out and they still played really good volleyball.
"They started out strong and they maintained the lead the whole night through. We were consistent all the way around. We had good serves, good passes, and even being out of their normal rotation they still stepped up and had fun with a perfect volleyball game."
DuBois improved to 11-5 with the win, while Clearfield fell to 0-16.
The Lady Beavers' excitement showed with 22 kills and 13 aces. Courtney Gross led DuBois with six kills, while Taylor Fleming followed with five. Kirsten Wilcox and Morgan Marchiori each had four kills and Jenna Maholtz and Kailyn Angelo combined for three kills.
"Taylor is my big middle, but we had her setting that third set because she wanted to do it, so we changed it up and had some fun," Peterson added. "Jordan Royer has been in the back row all year, but she's a senior so we let her swing up front a little bit, and she had fun too. We had a lot of good morale tonight, they had fun, and we won."
However, it was DuBois' service points that set the tempo with 13 aces. Gross led the way with six aces while Marchiori served up three. Carly Wallock had two aces, and Wilcox and Angelo each had one.
Clearfield on the other hand was still struggling to find that first win of the season.
"We didn't play very well. I don't know what it was, we didn't play well. DuBois played pretty well and it showed in the scores," Clearfield coach Bob Peters said. "I mean, all three games we weren't in the game. It's been a long season, but we have to keep plugging away and try to get a win somewhere."
In the first set, DuBois came out of the gate running, building a 4-2 lead. However, after Clearfield tied the game at 4-4, a Wilcox kill gave her the serve and the lady Beavers went on a scoring spree with Wilcox serving nine straight points.
Fleming nailed three kills in the run, while Angelo added one to keep the ball in Wilcox's hands for a 14-4 lead.
After Jamie Hoffer added a service point, Gross finished off the set with seven serves that included five aces, while Fleming and Marchiori added a kill each for the 25-8 win.
In the second set, DuBois started out slow, falling behind 4-1 until Fleming tied the game at 4-4. From that point on, DuBois plucked away with two and three service points, eventually building an 11-8 lead. Angelo gave DuBois some breathing room with three service points for a 14-8 lead while Fleming, Marchiori and Wilcox combined for the last 11 points to put the set in the books with a 25-13 win.
In the third set, Wilcox gave DuBois a commanding early lead with seven serves for a 13-3 lead that included four Gross kills.
After Gross added two service points and Wallock one, Clearfield made its move with Brittany Martell nailing three service points. Cammeron Ogden added four more to cut the DuBois lead to five, 18-13.
That was as close as Clearfield got with Angelo taking DuBois to the brink for a 23-14 lead while Fleming collected the win for a 25-15 set and the sweep.
Both teams are in action Monday with DuBois hosting Hollidaysburg while Clearfield hosts Curwensville.
