A 6-year-old Troutville girl was killed early Tuesday when she was hit by a vehicle while she was walking to the school bus stop along Route 410 near Mine Road in Brady Township.
DuBois-based state police the child, whose name was not released, was crossing the road about 6:20 a.m. when she was hit by a 2006 Ford van driven by Lori Louise Pearce, 42, Burnside. The van was eastbound on Route 410 when it hit the girl. Pearce continued east, believing she had hit a deer, police said.
A short distance later, Pearce and her passengers checked the vehicle and discovered minor front-end damage. Pearce went to work.
Police located the van a short time later at Pearce's place of employment. It had minor damage.
The child was taken to her home, where she was pronounced dead by Clearfield County Deputy Coroner Deanne Haines.
Passengers in the van were Abe Byler, Gerry Schalbach, Joe Trayer, Malhan Yoder, Neil Smucker, Perry Miller, Andy Amcobaltz, Allen Miller, Dannie Hosteter and Rueben Miller, all of Smicksburg. They were not injured.
Pearce was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured.
Brady Township and Sykesville volunteer fire departments, the state police Troop C Forensic Services and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team and area fire police assisted.
The state police and the Clearfield County District Attorney's Office are continuing the investigation.
