DuBOIS — Elk County Catholic’s Nick Daghir and Isaac Wortman made an unlikely run through the District 9 Class AA Doubles tournament on Monday to win the tournament over teammates Charles Bobby and Ryan Newton in the finals, 6-1, 6-3.

With the win, Daghir and Wortman — ECC’s No. 2 team entering the tournament, advance to the PIAA Class AA Doubles Tournament where they will take on the District 4 champions.

The Crusader duo started off the day by beating Brockway’s Josh Salada and Anthony Esposito, 10-6, and Clearfield’s Gavin Starr and Ryan Spencer, 10-0, in the quarterfinals.

Daghir and Wortman then picked up a big victory in the semifinals over Punxsutawney’s top team of Lucas Ambler and Sammy Gigliotti, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). In the tiebreaker in the second set, Daghir and Wortman were down 5-2 before winning seven of the next nine points to punch their ticket to the finals.

Bobby and Newton started out the day with a 10-5 win over Johnsonburg’s Trey Schneider and Nick Bliss, and a 10-3 win over Punxsy’s Tanner Zimmerman and Michael Lin.

In the semifinals, it took Bobby and Newton all three sets to defeat Bradford’s top team of Mitch Forbes and Brent Kennedy, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, which set up the all-ECC championship match.

“Today’s District 9 Doubles Tournament was labeled as a “wide open” tournament with no clear favorite projected to win it,” said first-year ECC coach Michael Jeselnick. “Of course, each coach looked to see their doubles team to come out on top.

“My No. 2 doubles team played well against a competitive Punxsutawney team, and Nick Daghir and Isaac Wortman hung in there to win in two sets. In the other semifinal, Charles Bobby and Ryan Newton held off a determined Bradford doubles team.

“It came down to the (both) Elk Catholic doubles teams facing off in the finals match, and the two teams played very well in both the semifinals and finals. I’m very pleased with today’s results, especially with the strategies dispalyed by both teams.”

In other matches from the area, St. Marys’ Zach Hart and Cody Schaberl fell 10-0 to Ambler and Gigliotti in the first round. The Dutchmen did get a win on the day as Adam Snyder and Joey Lewis won 11-9 over Clearfield’s Avery Rowles and Landan Cross. Snyder and Lewis fell in the quarters to Forbes and Kennedy.

Johsonburg’s Louie Karellas and Theo Schield fell to Bradford’s Jared Lucas and Alex Barton, 10-6, in the first round. The Rams’ No. 2 pairing in Schneider and Bliss lost to Newton and Bobby in the first round.

For DuBois Central Catholic, Keri Hollenbaugh and Anne Latuska fell to Starr and Spencer, 10-4, in the first round. Grant Norman and Colin Barnett also dropped in the first round to Zimmerman and Lin by the same score.

For Brockway, Salada and Esposito lost to the eventual champions in the first round. Weston Hrin and Nathan Bennett also were eliminated in the first round by Forbes and Kennedy by a score of 10-1.

The PIAA Class AA Doubles Tournament will take place on May 26 and 27 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
