ST. MARYS — The DuBois Central Catholic softball team used a six-run top of the third Monday to seize control of its game with St. Marys on its way to an 11-5 win over the Lady Dutch.
The game was tied 1-1 entering the third, with both teams scoring in the first inning.
Central Catholic’s Macey Hanes led off the game with a single and scored on a one-out double by Riley Assalone. St. Marys got that run right back in the bottom half, as Micayla Bothun hit a one-single and came home when Maddie Bowes reached on an error two batters later.
The Lady Cardinals then batted around in the third, scoring six runs on five hits and a Lady Dutch error to take a 7-1 lead.
Maia Cogley and Hanes hit back-to-back singles to open the inning before St. Marys erased Cogley at third when Jordy Frank hit into a fielder’s choice. Assalone followed with a two-run single to score hanes and Frank, while Libby Maurer added a two-run single of her own later in the inning to make it 6-1. Sabrina Spencer then capped the inning with a run-scoring single.
Assalone led the DCC attack, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Spencer and Hanes each were 2-for-3 on the day, with Hanes scoring three times and Spencer recording the one RBI.
St. Marys tried to answer back in the bottom of the third, as Morgan Krug, Bothun and Sydney Eckert all singled off Assalone to load the bases. However, the Lady Dutch managed just one run in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Bowes as Assalone worked out of danger.
Central Catholic (7-0) pushed its lead to 9-1 with two runs in the fourth, as DCC took advantage of two St. Marys errors. Lady Cardinal Kayla Bittner had a RBI single in the inning.
The Lady Dutch came right back with a two-spot of its own in the bottom of the fourth.
Bekka Bauer led off the inning with a home run, while Bothun added a sac fly later in the inning to score Maddie LeGrys, who reached on an error, to get the Lady Dutch within five runs at 9-4.
That’s as close as St. marys got though, as DCC added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Hanes led off the fifth with a walk, then quickly stole second and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Frank groundout. Frank started the action in the seventh with a one-out single. She stole second and later scored on a wild pitch.
St. Marys pushed one final run across in the bottom of the seventh, as Bowes ripped a one-out double and scored on a groundout by Lexi Cunningham to set the final.
Bowes, Krug and Bothun each had two hits for the Lady Dutch.
DuBois Central Catholic returns to action Wednesday at home against Elk County Catholic, while St. Marys play at DuBois Area today.
