LUMBER CITY — The Allegheny Mountain League started a new girls’ golf season on Monday afternoon as they kicked off the first meet at Eagles Ridge Golf Course.
Although DuBois has just four players on the roster, the Lady Beavers came to play as all four players shot in the 50s to take a team score of 216 to lead all teams on the day.
“For the opening day, I’ll take those scores,” said DuBois coach Barry Abbott. “The course played long. The greens were lightning fast. A 216 is a great team score.”
Host team Curwensville, which scored against every other team in the meet, went 2-2 on the day with a team score of 238. The Lady Tide fell to DuBois (216-238) and Punxsutawney (221-238), but beat Brookville (238-250) and Brockway (238-266).
Ridgway did not participate in the meet on Monday.
DuBois’ No. 4 player in Kacey Marsh led the way for DuBois as she carded a 51 to lead the way. No. 3 player Lexi Wray shot a 53, while Rebecca Defazio (55) and Kiersten Pearce (57) rounded out the Lady Beaver players.
“The two seniors –a 57 and 55 for Pearce and Defazio –that was wonderful,” said Abbott. “The two juniors, Wray and Marsh –a 53 and a 51. I felt bad for Lexi Wray. She had two lost balls right in the middle of the fairway. They just couldn’t find them. That’s four strokes. She could’ve possibly shot a 49.
“Overall (216) is a nice score. We’ll see if we can improve that as the season progresses and build on what we have.”
Punxsutawney was five shots back of DuBois in the match, but had the medalist on the day.
Morgan VanLeer shot a 47 on the afternoon to lead all players as she returns from playing in the regional tournament a year ago.
Brianna Hoover, the Lady Chucks’ No. 4 golfer, and No. 6 player Aleya Shaffer tied with both carding a 55. Kim Shoemaker turned in a 64 out of the Punxsy No. 2 spot.
Kylee Shoemaker (66) and Makenna Nesbit (69) also played for Punxsutawney.
Curwensville’s Hannah Hoover had the second-lowest score in the round as she scored a 50 out of the top spot. Lady Tide No. 2 player Dani Francisko was a shot behind Hoover with a 51.
Katie Hartman shot a 67 and Elizabeth Weddle had a 70, while Makayla Pizzuto (79) and Karter Bell (83) also played.
Out of Brookville’s five players in the event, three of them tied for the team lead with a 61. Lady Raider top player Zoe Cable, No. 4 Jenna Grant and No. 5 Jade Steele each shot a 61, while Bailey Ganoe carded a 67 from the third hole. Sophie Sharp shot a 76 out of the No. 2 spot.
Katlyn Cappetta led all Brockway players with a 59 out of the No. 1, while Erin Hultman had a 63 at No. 2. Cappetta and Hultman are the only two returnees for the Lady Rovers this season.
Sylvia Pisarchick carded a 66 in the No. 5 spot, while Grace Hepler shot a 78 at No. 4. Anndi Bartlett (79) and Mariah Serafini (84) also played.
All five teams will be back in action on Thursday in Punxsutawney for another AML meet.
