DuBOIS — The DuBois boys tennis team won all four singles matches on Tuesday afternoon as they edged Elk County Catholic, 4-3.
Joe Hnat, Glenn Kirk, Henry Sutter and Erik Shaffer all won their singles matches in two sets for the Beavers. Kirk needed a tiebreaker in the first set to beat the Crusaders’ Ryan Newton 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Hnat defeated Charlie Bobby 6-4, 7-5. Sutter beat Nick Daghir 6-2, 6-4, while Shaffer bested Ross Martin 6-4, 6-3.
Bobby and Newton teamed up in No. 1 doubles to beat Paul Brittain and Ben Suslow in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-3).
Daghir and Martin dropped Dom Umbaugh and Nick Troisi, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles. Joe Messiness and John Mader earned a win at No. 3 over Noah Knarr and Corey Giles, 8-4, to get a sweep in doubles for ECC.
“This was a great opportunity for us,” said Elk County Catholic head coach Ben Daghir. “Our players were able to compete and play against competitive players.
“DuBois dominated deuce. They won the big points.
“We are getting better, and we need to improve as a team. Our volleys are becoming more impressive, and our first serve percentage is rising. I look forward to our future matches and our opportunities to improve.”
Both teams host DuBois Central Catholic in their next match. DuBois plays the Cardinals this afternoon, while the Crusaders play DCC Thursday.

At DuBois, the DuBois Central Catholic boys tennis team took three singles matches and a pair of doubles matches in a 5-2 win over Johnsonburg on Tuesday afternoon.
Markus Peterson, Alex Micknis and Liam Barnett each took singles matches for the Cardinals.
Peterson and Barnett, the DCC Nos. 1 and 4 players, each won their matches by identical set scores of 6-2 and 6-3 over the Rams’ Tyler Martonik and Trey Schneider, respectively.
Alex Micknis won at No. 2 singles in straight sets of 6-0, 6-0 over Johnsonburg’s Henry Toncich.
Micknis and Peterson teamed to win their No. 1 doubles match over Martonik and Toncich, 8-4. Michael Zaffuto and Jon Prebe won the other doubles match at No. 3 over the Rams’ Theo Schield and Zach Hodgdon, 8-4.
For Johnsonburg, Louie Karellas won their lone singles match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kiki Blakley. Charles also teamed with Schneider for a win in doubles over Barnett and Cullen Engle, 8-5.
DuBois Central Catholic is back in action this afternoon in a crosstown match at DuBois.
Johnsonburg hosts Punxsutawney on Thursday.
