KITTANNING – Armstrong County District Attorney Katie Charlton announced yesterday (Tuesday) that criminal homicide charges have been filed against Melanie Sue Snyder in the death of her husband, Thomas Snyder.
The charges were filed at District Judge Gary DeComo’s office in Ford City.
Melanie Snyder was originally charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault after she allegedly attached her husband with a hatchet on July 27 as he lay in his bed at their home along Garretts Run Road in Manor Township.
The couple’s three children were at home at the time of the attack.
Melanie Snyder has remained in the Armstrong County Jail pending trial on the initial charges.
Following the attack, Thomas Snyder was hospitalized from the injuries he suffered. He remained in care and never returned home following the incident. He died on Dec. 27.
An autopsy was performed, after which Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers ruled the cause of death to be pneumonia as a consequence of encephalopathy of the brain due to blunt force trauma from the hatchet attack. He further ruled the manner of death to be homicide.
