REDBANK TWP. – A Mayport man was killed and two other people seriously injured in a head-on collision on May 11 at approximately 8:15 p.m. along Route 28, near Dewey Road, in Redbank Township (Clarion County).
While traveling south in the northbound lane of Route 28, police said David B. Anthony, 41, of Mayport, struck the front-end of a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by John J. Himes, 46, of Brockport, that was traveling north in the same lane.
According to reports, following the impact, Anthony’s 2004 Ford Escape began to spin and traveled approximately 155 feet south, exiting the west side of the roadway. The Escape continued approximately 27 feet off the roadway and rolled before coming to a stop on its left side facing southwest just west of Route 28.
After being struck by Anthony’s vehicle, Himes’s Santa Fe reportedly traveled approximately 105 feet north along the east side of Route 28 and left the roadway, before striking an embankment. The impact caused the Santa Fe to spin and slide an additional 35 feet north. The vehicle then came to a stop facing southwest, straddling the northbound lane fog line.
Anthony was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result.
Although wearing seatbelts, Himes and his passenger, Rachelle A. Himes, 47, of Brockport, suffered serious injuries. They were both transported to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.
Another passenger in Himes’s vehicle, a 10-year-old Brockport boy, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Penn Highlands Brookville. He was also wearing a seatbelt.
Hawthorn Area Volunteer Fire Department, New Bethlehem Fire Co. No. 1 and Summerville Volunteer Fire Department assisted state police at the scene.
