FOXBURG — The of the area youth football teams made it to the final weekend of the ABC Football League playoffs last Saturday at A-C Valley High School.
Union reached the finals of the junior division playoffs and dropped a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Armstrong in an 8-0 loss to finish second. Union finished the year at 9-1.
Both Redbank Valley teams played in the consolation game and each dropped two-point losses. The seniors fell 14-12 to Slippery Rock while the juniors lost in a 40-38 shootout to Grove City.
Armstrong won the senior title, routing Grove City, 40-0.
In the Bulldogs’ loss in the senior consolation game, the Bulldogs trailed 40-30 and scored on Broc Monrean’s 60-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Kahle and the following two-point conversion got it to 40-38, but Slippery Rock was able to run out the clock for the win.
Kahle scored three touchdowns, including a 4-yard run and a 65-yard kick return to go along with two two-point conversions. Drew Byers had a 12-yard TD run while Brandon Ross scored on a 10-yard run.
The Bulldogs trailed 34-22 at halftime before a Kahle interception set up his own 4-yard TD run. But the comeback came up short as the seniors finished the year 6-5.
For the juniors, the season ended at 8-2. Braylon Wagner scored on a run and caught a TD pass from Brock George for the Bulldogs’ points. Grove City led 8-0 at halftime, but the Bulldogs scored twice to take a 12-8 lead. Grove City took a 14-12 lead on a fourth-quarter TD and stopped the Bulldogs inside the 20 to preserve the win.
