BROOKVILLE — Last Tuesday at home against Keystone, Union Knights senior Nolan Cumberland broke a 24-year-old pole vault record.
Cumberland cleared 12 feet, 7 inches to surpass the 1995 mark of 12 feet, 6 inches established by Cory Hooks. At last Saturday’s DeMans Team Sports Track and Field Invitational in Brookville. Cumberland put up another strong performance when he cleared 12 feet, 6 inches to finish fifth overall.
Cumberland was one of three vaulters to get over 12 feet, 6 inches with Kane’s Teddy Race and St. Marys’ Nathan McAnany finishing higher in third and fourth because of less overall misses.
Bradford’s Steven Kellam cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to win the event and Bellefonte’s Andrew Hovis was second at 13 feet.
Also for the Knights at the 20-team event, Quintin Weaver had two top-10 finishes. He was fifth in the 400-meter dash (55.33) and eighth in the 1,600 run (4:56.2).
Doug Huffman had the other top-10 finish for the Knights with a 10th in the 110 hurdles (18.31). He ran a 17.9 in the preliminary heat.
For the Damsels, Lainey Stockdill was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet.
Hailey Kriebel was 13th in both the 800 (2:52.14) and 1,600 (6:11.43) runs.
Both teams were scheduled to run Wednesday at Clarion. Next Wednesday, they host Clarion-Limestone.

TUESDAY, April 16
Union swept at Clarion
At Clarion, the Union girls were edged by host Clarion 72-71 while the boys lost 100.5-39.5.
Maggie Minick was a triple-winner for the Damsels, taking both hurdles races (1:00.7 in the 300s and 20.12 in the 100s) while running a leg on the winning 4x400 relay with Cassie Austin, Morgan Cumberland and Nora Mason.
Austin won the discus (74 feet, 6 inches) and Marli Hawk won the javelin (72 feet, 11 inches) while finishing second in the discus.
The foursome of Lainey Stockdill, Alayna Ford, Mariah Ashbaugh and McKayla Deitz won the 4x100 relay in 55.91 seconds.
Stockdill was second in the pole vault as was Deitz in the 100 and 200 dashes. Mason was second in the 400 dash with Ashbaugh going runner-up in the 100 and 300 hurdles.
Dominika Logue was second in the shot put while Hailey Kriebel was second in the 800 and 1,600 runs.
Quintin Weaver doubled for the Knights, winning the 200 (25.8) and 400 (54.98) dashes while finishing second in the 100 dash and triple jump. Doug Huffman won the 110 and 300 hurdles (19.0 and 48.3) while Nolan Cumberland won the pole vault (12 feet) and finished second in the high jump.
Mitchell Marsh was runner-up in the 200 dash.
Both teams are back in action next Wednesday at home against Clarion-Limestone.

At Karns City, both Union squads lost, 129-20 for the boys and 118-32 for the girls.
The Knights got a triple-win day from Quintin Weaver, who won the 800 (2:18.9), 1,600 (5:02) and triple jump (39 feet, 11 inches).
Doug Huffman finished third in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Chase Burrell finished second in the 3,200 run.
The Damsels won three events, two of them by Lainey Stockdill in the 800 run (2:53.5) and pole vault (7 feet). Hailey Kriebel won the 1,600 run (6:39.9).
Marli Hawk and Cassie Austin were 2-3 in the javelin with Austin adding a third in the discus. McKayla Deitz was second in the 200 dash and long jump. Alayna Ford and Bryn Davis finished 2-3 in the 100 dash.
