CLARION — Winning five of its final seven bouts, the Clarion University wrestling team rallied for a 20-12 win over Cleveland State to earn a weekend split of its Eastern Wrestling League matches at Marwick-Boyd Auditorium Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles (7-4 overall, 2-1 EWL) were coming off Friday’s 30-6 loss to Edinboro. They host Rider Friday at Marwick-Boyd starting at 7 p.m.

Sunday’s bout between the Golden Eagles and the Vikings was expected to be a close one and the two teams did not disappoint, with Clarion holding a 6-4 edge in wins. The team match was not officially decided until the heavyweight bout at the end, with Toby Cahill’s valiant major decision effort against Collin Kelly sealing the deal.

Roshaun Cooley also contributed bonus points on Sunday, creating a one-point hole from which the Vikings never totally climbed out.

Also for head coach Keith Ferraro’s team, Brookville’s Gavin Park opened things with a 10-6 win over John Martin at 125 and another former Raider Taylor Ortz dropped a 5-2 decision to Ryan Ford at 149. Nationally-ranked Brock Zacherl of Brookville was not in the lineup for the Golden Eagles at 141.

Avery Shay also won for Clarion in a 1-0 decision at 157, Dom Rigous won a 7-3 decision at 174 and Dustin Conti won 6-2 at 197 to set up Cahill’s win at heavyweight.

In Friday’s loss to the Fighting Scots, Ortz was the lone winner at 149 with a 7-1 win over Jensen Lorea. Park lost a 24-9 technical fall to Sean Russell and Zacherl was also out of the lineup.

Ortz opened strong against Lorea and kept him on his heels the rest of the way. He scored a quick takedown and tilted Lorea for two more points in the first period, and reversed him from the down position to start the second period and give himself a 6-0 advantage.

Lorea managed an escape in the third period, but Ortz controlled the action the rest of the way to take the 7-1 decision.
