All of the area teams spring into action this weekend as the winter sports schedule gets off to a busy start.

The Redbank Valley Bulldogs basketball team hosts its own tournament while the Lady Bulldogs travel to Brockway. The Union girls head to Rocky Grove while the boys play at the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament once again.

The Redbank Valley wrestlers travel to the Hickory Hornets Invitational in Hermitage near Sharon once again.

Here’s a closer look at this weekend’s schedule:

Bulldogs host tip-off

At home, the Bulldogs have two new teams in the field with Mercer and West Shamokin replacing last year’s champion Ridgway and Moniteau.

Friday, the hosts open with Mercer at 7:30 p.m., which follows the 6 p.m. opener between Bradford and West Shamokin.

The junior varsity will play same first-round matchups in the auxiliary gymnasium with the same matchups flipped to avoid conflict with the varsity games.

Saturday, the consolation and championship games are in the main gym at 6 and 7:30 p.m. with the JV games at 4:30 p.m. in both gyms.

Lady Bulldogs at Brockway

Redbank Valley opens again at the Brockway Tip-Off Tournament against the hosts Friday at 8 p.m. The first game has Clarion and DuBois Central Catholic play at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, the times are earlier with the consolation and championship set for 12:30 and 2 p.m. respectively.

Last year, the Lady Bulldogs went 0-2 in Brockway with a loss to DCC in the first round and Clarion in the consolation game. DCC beat Brockway for the championship in a 56-45.

Union boys at Brookville

Once again, the Knights opens the season at the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament starting with defending champion Brockway Friday at 4:30 p.m.

The other two teams are the hosts and Moniteau, which replaced longtime entry Clarion-Limestone. They’ll finish off the Friday schedule at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, the consolation and championship games are set for 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Last year, the Knights went 0-2 with losses to C-L and Brookville.

Union girls at Rocky Grove

The Damsels have two scheduled games once again at the Roy Sanner Tip-Off Classic at Rocky Grove High School.

Friday, they start with the hosts at 7 p.m. with Saturday’s game with Commodore Perry scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m.

Last year, the Damsels went 0-2 with losses to Rocky Grove and Mercer.

It’s another trip to the Hickory Hornets Invitational for the Redbank Valley Bulldogs, who finished second at last year’s event.

The Bulldogs are one of 26 teams in the field, which includes the hosts, Union City, Maplewood, Sharon, West Middlesex, Northwestern, North East, Lakeview, Commodore Perry, Maplewood, Iroquois, Jamestown and Girard of District 10; Coudersport, Port Allegany, Keystone, Kane, Smethport and Ridgway from D9; Latrobe, Knoch, Mars and Ellwood City of the WPIAL; along with Grand Valley, Ohio, Woodrow Wilson of D.C., and Brookfield, Ohio.

Wrestling begins Friday and continues through Saturday.

The Bulldogs, who travel to Curwensville next Wednesday and go to the Armstrong Tournament next Saturday, aren’t home until their Christmas Tournament Dec. 30.
