SHARON — While the Redbank Valley Bulldogs are sending Mason Songer to the PIAA Championships, five wrestlers came up short in their bid to get to Hershey’s Giant Center this week at last weekend’s regional tournament held at Sharon High School.
All but junior Brayden Altobelli went winless as Altobelli finished 2-2 at 120 pounds. Finishing 0-2 were freshman Trenten Rupp at 106, junior Hunter Martz at 126, senior Logan Minich at 195 and freshman Aiden Gardner at 220.
Last Friday, Altobelli opened with an 8-3 preliminary round win over Aarron Gelvin of Greenville. In the quarterfinals, Altobelli was pinned in 51 seconds by eventual champion Isaac Crowell of Fort LeBoeuf.
Then in the consolation bracket, Altobelli edged Saegertown’s Jaeden Reagle, 3-1, before he was eliminated by Harbor Creek’s Mike Gabler in a 10-6 decision. He finished the year, 27-11.
As it turned out, Greenville’s Gelvin rallied back through the consolation bracket to finish fourth to grab a state playoff berth.
Martz lost to two state qualifiers — fourth-placer Kaeden Berger of Reynolds in a 9-2 quarterfinal bout and a pin by Harbor Creek’s third-placer Nick Oosterkamp. His season ended at 25-17.
“Brayden wrestled OK, just not good enough and the same with hunter, just not good enough and here you have to be a little better than good enough,” Kundick said.
Rupp was pinned twice at 106, in the first period by eventual runner-up Chase McClaughlin of Jamestown and in the second period by North East’s Caden Eastman. Rupp’s rookie varsity season finished at 21-13.
The Bulldogs’ other ninth-grader at Sharon in Gardner also went 0-2. He was pinned by Cochranton’s Dalton Boozer in Friday’s prelims and dropped a 9-3 decision to Harbor Creek’s Dom Viscuso and finished 24-13.
“Trenton’s learning and he and Aiden are freshmen and just getting here is a step in the right direction,” Kundick said.
Minich’s weekend felt like a win, but he went 0-2, causing Kundick a double-check of the bracket. It was certainly misleading as he was tied in the third period in his quarterfinal bout with No. 6 Lucas Folmar of Harbor Creek before getting pinned with 18 seconds remaining. Folmar went on to qualify for states with a fourth-place finish.
“It was tied in the third period, Logan tried to get out (from bottom), slipped and got pinned,” Kundick said.
Then in the consolation bracket, Minich fell to Elijah Hilliard of Slippery Rock, 6-4. Minich was denied valuable points and perhaps a pin when a cradle move was stopped by blood time on Hilliard.
“Hilliard beat him early in the year, so that was a big match for him and he did everything but win,” Kundick said. “He had a great cradle, they were going over and the referee saw blood just as they were going over.”
Minich, who lost a 14-4 major decision to Hilliard at the Armstrong Invitational back in December, finished 20-9.
“Logan has had a good career,” Kundick said. “He’s a good athlete, a solid wrestler and you hate to lose those kids.”
Kundick’s Bulldogs finished 9-7 in dual meets, eighth at districts and sent the second-most regional qualifiers from D9 to Sharon. Only Minich will graduate from the team’s postseason lineup.
“We had two kids out for most of the year and we got Ethan (Wiant) back but never did get (Travis) Crawford back,” Kundick said. “It was too late for Ethan to get down where he needed to but he won a few matches. Next year, hopefully everybody will be back.
“This isn’t an easy region. Getting to states is worth it. It’s a good thing.”
Here are Saturday’s results from the Class AA Northwest Regional Tournament in Sharon. The top four finishers qualified for this week’s PIAA Championships in Hershey.
