Rock women drop fifth straight
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with Seton Hill University for the majority of Saturday’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest, but couldn’t overcome a disastrous third quarter in a 75-65 loss at Morrow Field House last Saturday afternoon.
Slippery Rock dropped to 10-12 overall and 8-9 in league games going into Wednesday’s game at Mercyhurst. Saturday, the Rock hosts Clarion at 1 p.m.
Despite the defeat, Slippery Rock remained in sixth place in the PSAC West standings. The top six teams in the PSAC West standings at the conclusion of the season qualify for the conference tournament.
Slippery Rock outscored the Griffins 54-53 combined in the first, second and fourth quarters, but Seton Hill doubled up SRU, 22-11, in what turned out to be a decisive third period.
Redbank Valley’s Brooke Hinderliter finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.
In last Wednesday’s 67-53 loss to nationally-ranked Indiana, Hinderliter had 13 points and nine rebounds with three assists.
Hinderliter is averaging 14 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
Jr. high wrestlers 4th at tourney
INDIANA — Placing six in the top four spots, the Redbank Valley junior high wrestlers finished fourth at last Saturday’s 13-team Indiana Tournament.
The Bulldogs scored 103 points, finishing behind Indiana (164.5), Armstrong (120) and Marion Center (103.5). Kane was sixth at 97.5 points.
Dalton Bish and Kristopher Shaffer won titles at 115 and 130 pounds respectively. Bish went 3-0, finishing with a 4-3 win over Brady Filipovich of Marion Center in the finals. Shaffer also went 3-0, notching a 12-0 major decision in the finals.
Brenden Shreckengost and Gage Snyder reached the finals at 122 and 138 pounds. Shreckengost went 2-1, getting pinned in the final while Snyder was 2-1 as well after getting pinned in the final.
Jacob Kundick (1-2) and Ethan Young (2-2) reached the consolation finals at 95 and 145 pounds before losing and finishing fourth.
Also wrestling for the Bulldogs were Ridge Cook (2-2) at 110, Zeldon Fisher (1-2) at 155, Carson Rupp (0-2) at 165, Dustin Yarger (1-2) at 185, Kolby Barrett (0-2) at 210 and Gabe Carroll (0-2) at heavyweight.
In last Friday’s abbreviated match at home with Sharon, the Bulldogs dropped an 18-14 decision to Sharon. Just seven bouts were wrestled with Sharon winning four. Shaffer (pin), Snyder (decision) and Bish (technical fall) won for the Bulldogs.
Like the varsity squad, the Bulldogs are off until visiting Clarion Feb. 13.
More all-staters for Bulldogs
The Pennsylvania Football News released its version of last season’s all-state high school football teams three weeks ago.
Redbank Valley senior offensive lineman Logan Minich was one of nine District 9 players to be named all-state in Class A. He was named to the second team along with fellow D9er Christian Smith of C-L on the line. C-L’s Kyle Kerle was a receiver with Curwensville’s Nick Stewart at running back.
On the first team offense was Curwensville lineman Stephen McClure.
On defense, Ridgway senior defensive back Neil MacDonald was named a first team defensive back while C-L’s Justin Goodman landed on the second team line. Curwensville’s Josh Terry garnered second-team notice at defensive back as did Ridgway’s Johnny Mitchell at punter.
Redbank Valley’s Clint Thurston was an honorable mention pick on the defensive line.
Other D9 honorees:
First Team Defense: Zak Bauer, Clarion, linebacker.
Second Team Offense: Reed Williams, Kane, quarterback; Erik DeLong, Kane, running back; Bryan Dworek, Brookville, receiver; Thomas Wurster, Clarion, tight end.
Honorable Mention: Ray Maze, Kane, receiver.
Second Team Offense: Micah Heichel, Clearfield, receiver; Kyle Hopson, DuBois, receiver.
