With the addition of a varsity softball program at Union, it’s now a full slate of softball, baseball and track and field at both Union and Redbank Valley this spring as practices got started last week.

Here’s a quick look at all of the teams with the regular-season schedule just around the corner, weather-permitting of course.

It’s a small roster for head coach Craig Hibell, who enters his fifth season. The Bulldogs have 12 players on the preseason roster with pitching once again as their primary strength.

Back on the staff are Hibell’s top two arms in Bryan Layton and Grayson Harman. They won eight of the team’s 11 games in the Bulldogs’ 11-9 season that ended in their playoff opener in a loss to Brockway.

The Bulldogs’ season is scheduled to start on the road at Karns City in Butler on March 27. After that, it’s at home April 5 against A-C Valley.

Head coach John Sayers heads into his 14th season with 21 players on his preseason roster.

The Lady Bulldogs were 12-7 a year ago and the season begins for them, weather-permitting, March 27 at Karns City.

Track and Field

Over 90 athletes are on the rosters of the boys’ and girls’ teams, coached by Andy Rex and Mike Fricko once again respectively.

Two returning state qualifiers are on the rosters with junior Keaton Kahle and senior Emily Gourley. Kahle was the runner-up at districts in the 100-meter dash while Gourley finished in a three-way tie for second in the high jump to earn a trip to Shippensburg University.

Both teams open the season at home in a non-conference meet against Armstrong March 26.

The Knights hope to improve on last year’s 5-10 record under head coach Ange Salvo, who enters his third season.

Seniors Isaac Yoder, Lucas Bowser and Hunter Johnston, and juniors Lucas Salvo and Reice Saylor lead the way for the Knights, who are scheduled to open the season April 5 in Butler against Karns City.

It’s the first year for softball at Union and head coach Ray Ishman has 14 players on his initial roster.

The Damsels travel to Moniteau for their opener March 26.

Track and Field

New head coach Fred Weaver has 31 athletes — 16 girls and 15 boys — on his combined roster.

The season schedule is set to start for both teams at Redbank Valley March 28 with their home opener April 4 against North Clarion.
