DuBOIS — Friday was Senior Night at the DuBois Christian School, and fittingly its two senior girls — Shelby Brownlee and Julie Logan — enjoyed big nights to help lead the Lady Eagles past Centre County Christian Academy, 37-27,
The senior duo combined for 28 points to outscore the Lady Bulldogs on their own. Brownlee finished with a game-high 21 points, while Logan had seven to help DCS improve to to 12-3 overall and 10-2 in the ACAA West Division play. Sophomore Hannah Deitch didn’t score for DCS but pulled down 23 rebounds on the night.
The win kept the Lady Eagles’ hopes of winning the West Division title alive with a big game looming next week at Great Commission, which currently holds a one-game lead over DCS.
The victory, which was much closer than the teams’ first meeting that DCS won 49-19 at Centre County back on Jan. 9, was a nice bounce back from a tough 38-36 loss at Grier on Thursday. That non-conference loss ended the Lady Eagles’ eight-game winning streak.
“That team has improved a lot since the last time we played them,” said Lady Eagles coach Pastor Mark Montgomery. “We had such a big week last week with four games and winning all four, including beating the No. 1 team (cambria County Christian) on Friday.
“It’s been a hard week physically for us this week, but the gils came out and played hard tonight after a tough loss at Grier (Thursday). Being Senior Night, it was nice to see both our seniors play well.”
The first quarter was closely contested, with DCS holding a slim 8-7 lead after the opening eight minutes. The Lady Eagles then built some breathing in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Bulldogs, 11-2, to take a 19-9 advantage into the break. Brownlee had nine of her 21 points in the second quarter.
That 10-point cushion proved to be enough, although centre County got within seven points (28-21) by the end of the third thanks to an eight-point quarter by Cassandra Poorman, who finished with a team-high 13 points. Logan (5) and Brownlee (4) scored all nine DCS points in the third.
The Lady Bulldogs got no closer though, as a 3-pointer by Emily Deitch and hoop by Brownlee to start the fourth pushed the Lady Eagle back to 12 (33-21) before they eventually won by 10 points.
DuBois Christian travels to Great Commission on Tuesday. Great Commission handed Cambria County its second division loss Friday night.
